Since 2020, several all-cargo airlines have emerged in Europe, expanding the sector and addressing the rising demand for freight transportation. One example is Air Belgium Cargo, which launched in 2021, capitalising on its parent company’s experience to offer dedicated freighter services across Europe. Another notable newcomer is Global Supply Systems, a UK-based carrier that began operations in 2021, offering ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) services for cargo airlines.
Additionally, airBaltic Cargo has strengthened its cargo network with specialised freighter services, offering connections across Europe and beyond. These carriers, along with others, have contributed to the rapid growth of the all-cargo market, particularly in the post-pandemic recovery period, where airfreight remains crucial to global supply chains.
Here is a selection of newcomers.
European Cargo
Founded in December 2020 in the United Kingdom, European Cargo commenced operations with Airbus A340-600 converted freighters, initially focusing on urgent charter requests for PPE during the pandemic. Since then, the airline has expanded its network, offering routes such as Bournemouth to Chengdu.
The airline was conceived from “an entrepreneurial vision” during the pandemic, leveraging passenger aircraft converted to P-2-F (Passenger to Freighter) configuration. With over 400 charter flights completed, European Cargo is the world’s sole A340-600F operator under an approved STC. Its innovative approach has positioned the airline as a formidable player in the global air cargo industry. Additionally, the airline has played a pivotal role in transforming Bournemouth International Airport in the south of England into a dependable and cost-efficient airfreight hub.
CMA CGM Air Cargo
Launched in February 2021 by the French shipping group CMA CGM, the airline began operations with four Airbus A330-200Fs, based at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. The fleet has since expanded to include Boeing 777Fs, with plans for further growth.
To meet the increasing demand for agile logistics solutions, CMA CGM introduced this dedicated airfreight division, complementing its existing maritime, intermodal and logistics services. This expansion allows the company to support its customers across the entire transportation and logistics chain.
By 2025, two additional Boeing 777 freighters are set to join the fleet, followed by eight next-generation A350 freighters in 2026, each with a payload capacity of 104 tonnes, further enhancing CMA CGM’s airfreight capabilities.
One Air
Founded in 2021 and operational since July 2023, One Air, based in the United Kingdom, specialises in air cargo services with a fleet of Boeing 747-400 freighters. The airline offers worldwide ad-hoc full charter flights, connecting major global air cargo markets, with a focus on China and Hong Kong. Operating primarily from East Midlands Airport, One Air supports short-term air cargo projects, providing additional capacity during peak seasons or for intensive flight programmes. In February 2025, One Air held a special “LHR Open Day” for qualified candidates to explore current job vacancies across Engineering, Pilots (777 & 747), and Operations, including roles such as Maintenance Control Manager, Senior First Officer and various positions in compliance, safety and planning.
Compass Cargo Airlines
Established in 2021, this Bulgarian cargo airline operates a fleet comprising Boeing 737-800SF and Boeing 747-400F aircraft. As of Q1 2024, the fleet had completed 6,044 cycles, accumulated 9,679 block hours, and transported 77,283 tonnes of cargo. By August 31, 2024, the fleet had flown a further 4,157 block hours, carrying 36,032 tonnes across 1,975 sectors. Adhering to a motto of “always pointing in the right direction”, the airline’s Boeing 737SF fleet serves one of the world’s largest couriers across Europe, while its Boeing 747F flies across continents. This success is supported by certifications from the UK, USA and China.
MSC Air Cargo
Launched in late 2022 by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC Air Cargo began operations with Boeing 777F aircraft. The airline commenced revenue flights in December 2022 and has plans for fleet expansion. MSC Air Cargo celebrates a milestone in July 2024 with the launch of its first commercial flight from Milan Malpensa Airport to Hong Kong International Airport. This new route, operating twice a week, marked the beginning of MSC Air Cargo’s expanded airfreight network. The occasion also celebrates the arrival of MSC’s fifth aircraft, the Boeing 777-200 Freighter (I-MSCA), operated by AlisCargo Airlines.
In August 2023, SAS Shipping Agencies Services Sàrl, a subsidiary of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA, acquired AlisCargo Airlines, completing the full acquisition recently. This move strengthens MSC Air Cargo’s position in the airfreight industry and enhances its capabilities with the addition of the Boeing 777-200 Freighter, a state-of-the-art aircraft supporting MSC’s commitment to innovation and Italian heritage.
Jannie Davel, senior vice president of MSC Air Cargo, emphasised the significance of the acquisition and the addition of the Boeing 777, which will improve operational efficiency and enhance the company’s customer service.
