Yılmaz: “Climate change is the most important global problem”

Osman Yılmaz, Çelebi, managing director Turkey:

“It is a fact that, climate change is the most important global environmental problem in the world. As Çelebi, we accept the responsibility for this global problem and make numerous efforts to reduce our impact on climate change.

“For this purpose, we continuously increase our investments on electrical ground support equipment and new generation li-ion batteries. We try to use renewable energy potential (such as solar panels) as much as possible.

“We inform global investors and other related parties for all climate change prevention activities mentioned above via Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) which is the most comprehensive platform about environmental information sharing in the world. Information related to the calculation, verification, and reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are being shared and reported according to globally recognised ISO 14064 standard.

“In addition, Çelebi tries to attain sustainability in each environmental process. Consumption of the natural resources via designing environmentally friendly buildings have been reduced; therefore, we have LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification in IST Airport on Cargo Building being Silver level and Technical Building being Gold level.

“Also, we are monitoring our waste management system in zero waste concept. We reduce waste generation at source, and then we categorise each waste according to properties and finally we recycle through sending them to Licensed Facilities.

“Besides, we join Green Airport Project that has been launched by Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in order to reduce negative environmental effects, greenhouse gas emissions and to control our whole environmental management system and to see our continuous improvement areas.

“Then, with the certification according to ISO 14001:2015, a comprehensive environmental management system is implemented in global scale. Besides these, an environmental committee has been established in our stations at the airports, which generates many projects to solve environmental problems in local scale while increase environmental awareness.”
