Working together to improve aviation

Sustainability isn’t just one of the industry’s key pillars, it’s the cornerstone of aviation’s future strategy. It’s a critical topic that will be with the sector for years to come and involves stakeholders at every level.

Sustainability covers a wide range of initiatives, from sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and innovative technologies to plastic reduction and renewable energy. It’s an all-encompassing effort.

“We are committed to leading by example and bringing our partners along with us in this journey towards sustainability,” Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, stated.

“It’s not just about airlines or cargo handlers, all elements are critical to making airfreight more sustainable.

“As a part of a larger supply chain and ecosystem, our individual efforts, no matter how well-intentioned, can only go so far. Success hinges on the collective conviction of our customers, suppliers, and team members.

“I often refer to an African proverb that highlights this concept: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”

Business approach

In any industry, achieving a balance is crucial. There are always multiple targets or key performance indicators (KPIs) to consider. While growth is a priority, it’s not merely about expanding for the sake of it.

Lufthansa Cargo aims for sustainable growth and strives to maintain its reputation as a quality carrier. This balancing act applies not only to the organisation as a whole but also to individuals within it. It’s a challenging task, but one that they prioritise as an organisation.

“What we’re witnessing is a growing acceptance of sustainable initiatives,” Bhat highlighted.

“People no longer react with scepticism when sustainability in aviation is discussed; it’s becoming mainstream.

“Similarly, terms like “reusable plastic” and “upcycling” are no longer unfamiliar concepts; they’re part of the conversation.

“Moreover, advancements in technology and digitisation are facilitating our efforts in this direction.

“The pace of technological evolution is rapid, and it’s essential to stay informed and share new developments with collaborators to drive the industry forward. Keeping an open mind and embracing innovation will be key to advancing sustainability in aviation.”
