Singapore Airlines CEO picked as IATA Board of Governors chairman

Singapore Airlines chief executive officer (CEO), Goh Choon Phong has assumed the position of chairman of the IATA Board of Governors for a one-year term.

He assumed the duties at the end of the 73rd International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Cancun, Mexico, succeeding International Airlines Group CEO, Willie Walsh.

Goh says it is an honour to serve as chairman, and though profitability is improving, more work must be done in areas including security and partnerships with governments.

He says: “Additionally, I will be paying special attention to progressing preparations for the Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), driving the modernisation of cargo processes, and increasing transaction volumes with the New Distribution Capability. We have a busy year ahead.”

Goh joined Singapore Airlines in 1990 and held senior management roles in Singapore and overseas before being appointed CEO in 2011.

IATA’s Board of Governors also agreed to appoint Qatar Airways CEO, Akbar Al-Baker to succeed Goh for a one-year term from June 2018.

The 74th AGM will be held in Sydney from 3 – 5 June 2018, the third time it has been held in Australia, in 1961 and 2000, both in Sydney.
