Robust exports help HKIA grow 12.9% in May

Cargo volumes at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) have grown by 12.9 per cent in May, with exports proving particularly robust.

HKIA handled 409,000 tonnes of cargo in May, with exports growing 21 per cent, and Europe and North America increasing most significantly.

Volumes have increased 11.3 per cent in the first five months of 2017 to 1.9 million tonnes and 8.5 per cent to 4.71 million tonnes on a rolling 12-month basis.

So far every month of 2017 has seen strong year-on-year growth, starting with 3.1 per cent to 361,000 tonnes in January, followed by two months of double-digit increases in February, up 14.1 per cent to 294,000 tonnes and 17.8 per cent to 433,000 tonnes in March, and cargo grew 8.9 per cent to 398,000 tonnes in April.
