New freight and borders minister has opportunity to drive growth, says Logistics UK

  • The announcement that Keir Mather MP has been appointed Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation with responsibility for freight and borders is welcomed by business group Logistics UK.
  • Acting Chief Executive Kevin Green is now urging the new Minister to seize the opportunity to drive growth through an ambitious freight and logistics plan.

“Appointing Keir Mather MP as Minister with specific responsibility for freight and borders shows the government recognises the strategic importance of the logistics sector and is listening to industry’s call for ministerial representation.

“The productivity of the economy and prosperity of the logistics sector are completely intertwined so it is now crucial that the Minister works with departments across Whitehall to implement an ambitious plan for freight and logistics.

“Logistics UK has been calling for cross-departmental, dedicated logistics and supply chain minister for some time. If this government is serious about changing the country’s economic fortunes, our members believe it is imperative that the new Minister prioritises policies that will drive growth across the whole economy by delivering what our sector, and country as a whole, needs on infrastructure, decarbonisation, trade and skills.”

Logistics UK is one of the UK’s biggest business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With decarbonisation, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, water and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods.
