Kerry Logistics sends sea lions to Chinese theme park

Kerry Logistics has moved two sea lions from the UK to their new home at the Hainan Ocean Paradise theme park in Sanya, China.

The logistics provider teamed up with Hainan based Kerry EAS Logistics to ensure a swift journey, with Merlin and Reggie the sea lions settling into their new homes within two hours of landing.

Merlin from Brightlingsea, Essex and Reggie from Flamingo Land in Malton, North Yorkshire travelled to London Heathrow Airport via dedicated temperature-controlled vehicles.

David Mallinson, general manager – UK air division of Kerry Logistics says: “Transhipment via any other European or Chinese airports was not in the animal’s interest, so we opted for a direct service, and the choice of aircraft (Airbus A330 – 200) that gave the guarantee of the hold temperature being regulated between two and eight degrees centigrade.”

Veterinary processes were orchestrated with 48 hours of flight departure and after customs clearance, the animals were sent directly to the aircraft and loaded for the 11 hour 40 minute flight.

Mallinson says Kerry Logistics checked all documents such as the European Health Certificates, Live Animal Packing Declaration and Import Permit for China were in order.

He says: “Our team showed great flexibility and understanding in planning and executing this shipment. We look forward to receiving similar requests.”
