Expert insights on supply chain challenges and opportunities in 2025

As we step into 2025, global supply chains face an array of ongoing economic, geopolitical, and environmental challenges. Amid these challenges, major global shifts and rapid technological advancements are driving businesses and their supply chains into a period of profound transformation.

In the UK, economic pressures, including rising corporation tax, increased National Insurance contributions, and escalating labour costs, are placing considerable strain on businesses. These challenges are further compounded by lingering Brexit trade complexities and the potential for a worsening UK economy, creating an even more precarious environment in which supply chains must operate.

From a global perspective, the disruption posed by geopolitical instability in the Middle East, the business consequences set to follow Trump’s inauguration, and the growing influence of BRICS should not be overlooked. On top of this, the effects of climate change continue to impact the availability of raw materials and compromise transport routes – while evolving sustainability legislation and consumer expectations put pressure on businesses to ‘do good’.

But while external circumstances are turbulent within the sector, supply chains are being augmented by AI, which is playing an increasingly pivotal role in optimising operations, managing risk, and enhancing efficiency. The continued integration of AI, however, doesn’t come without its concerns, from escalating cyberattacks to over-reliance on digital systems.

The year ahead will certainly test the resilience and ingenuity of the global supply chain network. Those unable to adapt may risk closures. However, companies that invest wisely in technology, embrace sustainability in a smart way, and foster collaboration across the industry are best positioned to thrive in this challenging environment.
