Turkish Cargo, the logistics brand of Turkish Airlines, is not just growing; it is determined to meet an ambitious goal of being “the biggest and the best in the air cargo industry”.
The airline’s expansive reach is unparalleled. With operations spanning 130 countries and 106 dedicated cargo destinations, the carrier flies to more international destinations than any other airline. By 2033, Turkish Cargo plans to expand its network to 150 destinations, solidifying its position as a leader in global connectivity.
“Our network is our strength,” Volkan Solmaz, Cargo Sales Vice President for the Asia Pacific at Turkish Cargo, emphasised. “With 476 aircraft, including 25 freighters, we have the capability to deliver cargo where it’s needed most, ensuring our clients benefit from the best in logistics solutions.”
State-of-the-art
At the heart of Turkish Cargo’s operations is SmartIST, its massive cargo hub at Istanbul Airport. The facility, already the largest in Europe and the third largest globally, spans 205,000 square meters and boasts a current annual capacity of 2.2 million tonnes. With the completion of Phase 2, its capacity will soar to 4.5 million tonnes, positioning it among the world’s most advanced logistics hubs.
“SmartIST is not just a hub; it’s a technological marvel,” said Solmaz. “It embodies our commitment to efficiency, innovation, and customer satisfaction, offering seamless operations and scalable capacity to meet growing global demands.”
Special cargo and e-commerce
A key component of Turkish Cargo’s strategy is its focus on special cargo, which includes temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, perishables, and high-value goods. Special cargo accounts for 37 percent of the airline’s freight revenue, reflecting its strategic importance.
In addition, Turkish Cargo is making significant strides in e-commerce through initiatives like WIDECT, a solution designed to meet the unique demands of online retail. “e-commerce is reshaping global trade, and we are at the forefront, offering tailored solutions to ensure speed, reliability, and cost-efficiency,” Solmaz explained.
Strategic sustainable pillar
As part of its commitment to environmental responsibility, Turkish Cargo has implemented a range of green logistics initiatives. The company’s efforts were recognised with a silver medal in the Ecovadis sustainability survey, reflecting its focus on reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices.
“Sustainability is no longer optional—it’s imperative,” Solmaz remarked. “We are integrating eco-friendly technologies and practices across our operations to minimise our environmental footprint while delivering world-class logistics services.”
Innovative expansion
Looking to the future, Turkish Cargo has set its sights on significant growth. The airline plans to expand its freighter fleet from 25 aircraft in 2023 to 44 by 2033, alongside ambitious network expansion. Digital transformation is also central to its strategy, with investments in blockchain, IoT-enabled tracking, and advanced AI systems to optimise operations.
“Our growth strategy is anchored in innovation and excellence,” Solmaz said. “By embracing cutting-edge technologies and expanding our fleet and network, we aim to set new benchmarks for the air cargo industry.”
“Turkish Cargo is rising to meet the demands of a changing world,” Solmaz concluded. “Through innovation, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, we are not just participating in the future of logistics; we are shaping it.”
