An innovative future

An innovative future

Influenced by changing market demands, innovative advancements in technology, and the increasing impact of e-commerce, the air cargo sector is experiencing a significant transformation.

Since its inception in the early 1990s, SmartLynx focused primarily on passenger transport. However, in response to the shifts in the aviation landscape, following the Covid-19 pandemic, the airline made a strategic pivot towards air cargo operations.

“Entering the cargo market in 2020 was not just a reaction to a temporary situation; it was part of a well-considered long-term strategy,”  Edvinas Demenius, CEO of SmartLynx Airlines, explained.

“Diversifying our fleet was essential for our growth, and we believed that expanding into the freighter market was a logical step.”

This decision to venture into cargo operations proved fortuitous. The airline began by incorporating its first converted Airbus A321 freighters into service—a strategic choice bolstered by immediately securing partnerships with logistics giants like DHL.

“We were the first to offer the A321F, which was specifically sought after by clients like DHL,” Demenius pointed out. “Our ability to meet demand with the right equipment right at the onset was a game changer for us.”

SmartLynx boasts a cargo fleet of 13 A321P2F freighters, with plans to welcome a 14th aircraft by the end of 2024.

“While the initial surge in demand during the pandemic has stabilised, we’ve observed consistent growth in specific regions. We are optimistic about the future, as the appetite for air cargo continues on a steady upward trajectory,” Demenius noted.

With a capacity of 27,000 kilograms and accommodating 14 full container positions on its main deck, the A321F is suited for efficient short-haul operations, which allows SmartLynx to maintain a competitive edge.

“We have over 30 years in the industry, and we are committed to finding the best solutions for our customers. Our track record in ACMI—aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance—helps us build trust with our partners,”  Demenius continued.

Targeting segments

With e-commerce set to become a third of all air cargo volumes by some estimates, operators have developed operations to ensure they can capitalise on the value of this growing segment.

“When we ventured into the freighter market, we anticipated that e-commerce would be a key driver for demand,” Demenius stated.

“The initial spike during the pandemic may have diminished, but we believe in the underlying demand for newer aircraft and technologies that can respond to market needs.”

“The outlook for the air cargo market is quite promising, with consistent volume growth observed globally,” Demenius stated enthusiastically. Referencing data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), he highlighted how the first half of 2024 has recorded a remarkable year-on-year demand increase of 13.4%.

“To meet this demand, we plan to fully utilise our freighter operations and expand our geographic presence over the next three to five years,” he explained.

Advancements in airfreight

In an industry where technology is rapidly advancing, SmartLynx has looked to embrace a proactive approach.

“We have always been driven by technology,” Demenius asserted.

“Our investments in digital technologies aim to optimise our operations and enhance customer service. Advanced software systems for flight planning, weight and balance, and operational efficiency are now integral parts of our framework.”

One of the standout features of the A321F is its short turnaround time. Thanks to its automated loading system, a full load can be processed in and out in just 40 minutes. This is a critical requirement for the express freight market.

“By innovating processes, SmartLynx can reduce turnaround times, improve accuracy, and ultimately serve its customers more effectively,” he added.

“Utilising advanced training programmes and simulation technologies, we make sure that our team stays ahead of the curve with industry standards. When our employees are well-prepared, the benefits are reflected in our operations.

Adaptable to environments

The modern and fuel-efficient fleet of A321 freighters is designed to operate in diverse scenarios, ensuring adaptability in various market conditions.

However, operating in the European cargo market presents its own challenges, particularly high competition and a current pilot shortage affecting the aviation industry globally.

“The freighter market is intensely competitive, often driving down yields,” Demenius acknowledged. “But we are not discouraged. We remain patient yet determined.

“Engaging actively with various clientele allows us to identify areas where we can maximise efficiency and performance.

Greener mission

As sustainability emerges as a critical issue in the aviation sector, SmartLynx Airlines is placing significant emphasis on environmentally friendly practices within its cargo operations.

“Sustainability is not a trend for us; it’s a fundamental part of how we operate,” Demenius insisted.

“The A321F consumes less fuel than many of its competitors and produces considerably lower noise levels, which is essential given the stringent regulations in urban regions.”

“In terms of operational efficiency, we utilise advanced flight planning and optimisation software to improve flight routes and manage loads intelligently,” he continued.

“These measures contribute to lowering emissions, aligning us with global sustainability goals.”

The commitment to sustainability extends to its operations, having introduced a paperless cockpit concept nearly a decade ago and applying the same principles to its cargo operations. “This not only reduces costs but also helps us be environmentally responsible,” Demenius noted.
