US carriers apply for permission to serve Cuba

New United Airlines Cargo website

US carriers are looking to take advantage of the US and Cuba agreeing to resume scheduled services by applying to the US Department of Transportation for approval for non-stop flights.

So far, Alaska Airlines would like to operate twice daily flights between Los Angeles and Havana with a Boeing 737-900ER, while Delta Air Lines want to serve the Cuban capital from New York and Atlanta with Boeing 757-200s, and Miami and Orlando with Boeing 737-800s. United Airlines has applied to serve Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport with 737-800 flights from Newark Liberty International Airport, Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

American Airlines would like to operate 10 daily flights between Miami International Airport and Havana, with daily services from Charlotte, Dallas Fort Worth, Los Angeles and Chicago. American Airlines would also like to connect Miami with the Cuban cities of Santa Clara, Holguin, Varadero, Camaguey and Cienfuegos.

American Airlines chairman and chief executive officer (CEO), Doug Parker says: “American’s proposed service – from Miami and four other hubs – will provide a strong foundation for the sustained future growth of commercial and cultural ties between the US and Cuba.”

Delta vice president, Latin America and the Caribbean, Nicolas Ferri says: “We look forward to providing access to the island from the US and around the world. If approved, these frequencies would increase the strength of our network.”

United president and CEO, Oscar Munoz says: “This is a historic moment for our company, our employees and, most importantly, our customers.”
