60 Seconds With…. Kim Smith

60 Seconds With…. Kim Smith

Kim Smith is ACW’s Director of Operations, also heading up the company’s marketing activities. Her work spans everything from organising the ACW Awards to updating mailing lists and creating promotional materials,  a variety she thrives on, as no two days are ever the same.

What do you enjoy most about working in the air cargo/logistics industry?

The people. There’s a strong sense of connection across the industry, and I’ve had the opportunity to travel to countries I might never have visited otherwise, which has been a real highlight.

What’s a recent project or achievement you’re proud of?

Organising the ACW World Air Cargo Awards 2025. It’s a big event with a lot of moving parts, and seeing it all come together is always a proud moment.

How do you stay informed and inspired in your work?

I read Air Cargo Week, of course! It’s the only news source you’ll ever need.

What skill or quality do you think is essential for success in our field?

The ability to connect with people — whether that’s a CEO, a sponsor, or the person handing you your lanyard at check-in. Relationships are everything.

Which destination would you love to visit for work or leisure, and why?

Saudi Arabia. I’ve never been, but I’m fascinated by the history, culture, and particularly the sheer scale of the royal family. Honestly, I’ve read more royal biographies than most historians.

What’s one thing your colleagues might not know about you?

They probably know it all! I’m very open, very inclusive… and I have a wicked sense of humour that’s only mildly threatening before coffee.

One word to describe your work style?

Organised. (With lists to prove it.)

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

I haven’t really had any. Is that a red flag? Possibly. But I seem to be doing okay without it…?

How do you unwind after a busy day?

I love crocheting toys — amigurumi, to be specific. Give me a ball of yarn and a quiet evening, and I’ll give you a miniature octopus or sleepy giraffe in return.

What was your first job, and what did it teach you?

I worked at a microfilm reprographics company as an account’s assistant. It taught me that I definitely wasn’t destined for life as an accountant. Ever.

What’s your go-to productivity hack or routine?

Lists. Lists. And more lists. Online, on paper, probably on napkins if inspiration strikes at lunch. There’s nothing more satisfying than ticking things off.

What motivates you to keep pushing forward on tough days?

A sense of responsibility and pride in what we do. Sometimes it’s just about staying focused, keeping things in perspective, and pushing through.

What’s something quirky or unusual you always keep at your desk?

A salt lamp. I find the warm, soft light calming — it helps create a more peaceful workspace.
