Looking to capitalise on Abu Dhabi’s location, Etihad Cargo is working closely with the region’s Department of Health and Rafed to refine its operations and build strategic partnerships.
“Without the right collaboration, none of this would be possible. This ecosystem, both physical and digital, must work together seamlessly and we’ve been focusing heavily on real-time tracking capabilities to enhance our service and ensure visibility for our customers,” said Fabrice Panza, Business Development Manager, Pharmaceuticals.
Etihad Cargo’s approach to pharma logistics is rooted in a comprehensive understanding of both global and national market demands. This includes working with international partners, providing a complete global ecosystem for pharmaceutical logistics.
“We are analysing the specific products being shipped, whether they are deep-frozen solutions or temperature-sensitive goods that require a controlled environment between 2-8°C or 15-25°C,” Panza explained.
“The market’s needs are constantly evolving,” Panza continued. “And the more we understand the unique requirements of different countries, whether those are export or import trends, the more effectively we can shape our operations and procurement strategies.”
Certified network
A key factor in Etihad Cargo’s success is its commitment to working with certified partners, ensuring all players in the supply chain meet the highest standards. Over the last decade, the number of IATA CEIV Pharma-certified companies has grown exponentially, providing Etihad Cargo with a trusted network of partners to help deliver high-quality services.
Panza noted: “As the number of certified partners grows, the bar for quality continues to rise. This has been essential for us to ensure every pharmaceutical shipment is handled with care and precision.”
With the growing demand for high-value, smaller shipments, such as those for cell and gene therapies, precision in handling has never been more critical. While these shipments may be smaller in volume compared to large vaccine campaigns, their value is incredibly high.
“Both the shipper and the airline must be involved in the qualification process to ensure high standards,” Panza added.
Innovation in operations
Technology plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of these operations. Etihad Cargo leverages IoT and real-time tracking technology to monitor shipments closely. This enables the company to flag even the smallest discrepancies, ensuring shipments remain within the required temperature ranges and are handled correctly.
“We’ve placed a strong emphasis on live tracking to ensure every aspect of the operation is monitored in real time,” Panza outlined.
“As the pharmaceutical sector continues to evolve, we are adapting by offering innovative, tailored solutions that can meet the most demanding needs of our customers,” he said.
“Whether it’s through real-time tracking, advanced passive containers, or fast turnarounds, we are fully committed to providing the highest level of service for pharmaceutical shipments.”
Moreover, the integration of government support is integral to ensuring smooth operations. Panza highlighted the role of government agencies: “Government bodies, such as ministries and customs, help accelerate the flow and prevent delays. For example, cutting-edge technology provided by these agencies allows us to clear shipments in-flight, ensuring we don’t physically stop the shipment and keep it moving smoothly.”
Year-on-year success
Showcasing Abu Dhabi’s position, Etihad Cargo has experienced a consistent increase in pharmaceutical volumes, far surpassing the industry’s natural growth rate. “This sustained increase in volumes speaks to the strength of our Etihad Cargo Pharma Life product and its continuous improvement in quality,” Panza said.
“With this increase in demand, the requirements become more complex and demanding. This commitment is essential not only to meet the evolving demands of the pharmaceutical industry but also to stay ahead of emerging trends.
“We’re also making significant investments in Abu Dhabi. These initiatives will not only enhance our capabilities but also attract a range of businesses to Abu Dhabi, including those involved in clinical trials, manufacturing and distribution. This is a full ecosystem that has never been seen before.”
