Frankfurt Airport saw cargo volumes fall by 3.6 per cent in November to 195,505 tonnes, during the month when Lufthansa strikes caused major disruption.

In November, Lufthansa’s flight attendants went on strike, causing a week-long walk out. This resulted in 3,400 scheduled flights being cancelled.

Between January and November, Frankfurt Airport has seen cargo volumes fall by 2.5 per cent to 1.9 million tonnes.

In November, Frankfurt’s operator, Fraport, has seen growth at its other airports. Ljubljana Joze Pucnik International Airport in Slovenia volumes increase in November by 10.9 per cent to 857 tonnes, and between January and November, by 2.2 per cent to 9,171 tonnes. Jorge Chavez International Airport in Peru’s capital, Lima, saw volumes increase in November by six per cent to 28,965 tonnes though year-to-date (YTD) it has dipped by 0.1 per cent to 271,449 tonnes.

In Bulgaria, Burgas Airport handled 1,982 tonnes in November and between January and November handled 11,314 tonnes. Varna Airport, Fraport’s other Bulgarian hub, handled nine tonnes in November and 88 tonnes YTD.

Fraport’s other Germany airport, Hannover-Langenhagen saw a 3.1 per cent dip in November to 1,666 tonnes though YTD volumes increased by 16.5 per cent to 15,844 tonnes. In China, Xi’an Xianyang International Airport has doubled in a year, handling 190,016 tonnes in November alone, and 362,102 tonnes for the year so far.
