IATA e-AWB end of year target likely to be missed

Electronic air waybill (e-AWB) penetration has risen to 35.1 per cent in October, an improvement on September but reaching the end of year target of 45 per cent is unlikely.

Penetration increased by 0.9 per cent over September, according to the International Air Transport Association, but this is a slowdown compared to previous months, which have seen improvements of over two per cent. It is up from 20.7 per cent penetration this time a year ago.

The US handled the most e-AWBs by volume in October, and penetration is 34.6 per cent. By percentage, the United Arab Emirates processed the most e-AWBs, at 75.3 per cent, and fifth by volume. In Europe, Germany handled the most e-AWBs by volume though penetration is only 21.9 per cent, which is beaten by both the Netherlands, at 39.7 per cent and France at 32.9 per cent.

By airport of origin, Hong Kong International Airport handled the most e-AWBs in October, and had a penetration of 66.8 per cent. By percentage Bole International Airport in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa had the highest penetration of 92.9 per cent. In Europe, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol handled the most e-AWBs and had the highest penetration at 39.5 per cent.

Cathay Pacific handled the most e-AWBs by volume among airlines in October, followed by the Air France KLM Group. Flydubai had the highest penetration, at 100 per cent. Among freight forwarders, DHL Global Forwarding handled the most e-AWBs by volume and Qatar Aviation Services managed 100 per cent penetration, though ranks 46th by volume.
