Edmonton International Airport has reported its cargo village posted continued strong growth in 2014.
The Canadian gateway grew for the fifth consecutive year with cargo volume rising by 3.9 per cent last year. Over the last five years, volume has grown by 25 per cent. Last year’s performance, was attributed to the C$30 million ($24 million) investment in upgrades to cargo facilities, equipment, taxiways and land servicing.
The airport says factors contributing to growth, were Cargojet upgrading its service from a Boeing 757F to a widebody Boeing 767-300, increasing payload and volume for businesses to ship larger goods. Others are DHL Express launching a commercial route to Edmonton that arrives earlier and leaves later.
Edmonton has also expanded cargo apron seven to accommodate two additional code F aircraft, and built additional operating and storage areas. The airport aupgraded its ground handling equipment with a new, 2014 commander 60 main deck loader, eight 20-foot dollies and a 20-foot drive-over scale.
Edmonton’s vice president of commercial development, Myron Keehn, says further expansion is underway, and it will add 370,000 square feet of cargo, warehouse and office space this year.
