DB Schenker opens solar-powered Dubai hub

DB Schenker has opened its first fully solar-powered logistics centre in Dubai South, next to Al Maktoum International Airport.

The 33,000 sq m logistics centre, DLC II will become the central hub in the Middle East for DB Schenker’s customers including Unilever.

After a successful first collaboration in Saudi Arabia, DB Schenker and Unilever officially inaugurated the Dubai hub on Monday 9 December in the presence of His Excellency Khalifa Al Zaffin, executive chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation and Dubai South.

Other high-ranking guests from Unilever were present, along with Xavier Garijo, member of the DB Schenker board for contract logistics; Christopher Smith, CEO of DB Schenker MEA; and Ako Djaf, head of contract logistics/SCM for Middle East and Africa.

Garijo says: “The DLC II clearly demonstrates: We plan and act sustainably. This makes us one of the world’s leading logistics providers. We use resources in an ecologically sensible way in order to reduce CO2 emissions and costs. Sustainability is a competitive advantage for our customers and for us.”

The temperature-controlled logistics centre offers space for 90,000 Euro pallets in a 33,000 sq m with a 3,000 sq m mezzanine for value-added services.

The logistics centre’s portfolio includes warehouses for hazardous materials, value-added services, distribution and delivery services as well as ocean and airfreight.

DLC II has direct connections to Al Maktoum airport and Jebel Ali Port, and is the second of three phases of DB Schenker’s growth plan in Dubai.

By 2021, DB Schenker will have 80,000 sq m capacity for logistics space.
