Brussels Airport saw a huge 21 per cent increase in cargo volumes in January compared to the same month in 2016 – which it puts down to growth in the freighter and integrator segments.
The airport handled 44,952 tonnes, which was significantly up on the 36,964 tonnes in January last year and a welcome start to 2017 for the Belgian gateway.
Brussels Airport notes the progress in freighter traffic at the end of last year is continuing its momentum in January 2017 and it handled 34,214 tonnes, a 35.5 per cent uplift on the same month last year.
Of this, freighters made up 17,316 tonnes, up 81.4 per cent and integrators 16,897 tonnes, up 7.6 per cent.
Bellyhold cargo did though fall by 8.4 per cent to 10,739 tonnes from 11,720 tonnes in January 2016. The airport says this is mainly due to the departure of certain airlines such as Jet Airways in March 2016 and therefore to the decrease in the number of long-haul flights.
In addition, Brussels Airport notes that the share of exports of pharmaceuticals and perishables in the cargo activities at the Belgian gateway is gaining ground.
