Leipzig/Halle blasts past the million tonne barrier

Leipzig/Halle Airport has exceeded the one million tonne mark for the first time, reaching 1,002,875 tonnes on 14 December.

Leipzig/Halle, which is the second-largest airport in Germany in terms of cargo and fifth in Europe, also set a monthly record in November, handling 96,081 tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 11.3 per cent. Express freight was the main driver of growth while the charter business was also strong.

Leipzig/Halle Airport managing director and Mitteldeutsche Flughafen board spokesman, Johannes Jahn says: “By breaking through the one million tonne sound barrier, Leipzig/Halle Airport is underlining its role as Europe’s fastest growing cargo hub.”

“Thanks to the latest infrastructure, a 24/7 operating permit for cargo flights, available space at and around the airport and the consistent ongoing development of our range of services along the complete logistics chain, the site offers further growth potential in the long term too.”
