Malpensa introduces ‘second line’ warehouses as it upgrades infrastructure

Milan Malpensa Cargo is now offering ‘second line’ warehouses at Milan Malpensa Airport as part of a programme to upgrade and develop cargo infrastructure.

These will be offered alongside ‘first line’ warehouses, a complementary type of warehouse, already existing in some major European airports, but quite new in Italy, which it says will bring the airport in line with the “most advanced international facilities”.

The airport says the project responds to a need increasingly felt by international freight forwarders and major global e-commerce companies that use the gateway.

Malpensa explains freight forwarders and e-commerce operators will have the opportunity to build, within the airport grounds and close to Cargo City, large areas of ‘second line’ warehouses, without direct access to the aircraft apron, to be used as bases for the processing  of incoming and outgoing shipments.

The airport says new facilities could create a more efficient, safe and cost-effective logistics chain using Malpensa Airport, giving users new opportunities to be more competitive in handling goods arriving at and departing from Malpensa.

Milan Malpensa Airport’s cargo volumes surged by 15 per cent in October to 53,000 tonnes, which was a monthly record. It has been growing strongly, with a nine per cent increase in 2015 pushing volumes over 500,000 tonnes.
