Amazon.com is facing another fine from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for breaching hazardous materials regulations, its fourth civil penalty of the year.
The Department of Transportation’s FAA is proposing a fine of $78,000 for allegedly offering FedEx a shipment containing flammable liquids from Ruskin, Florida to Algonquin, Illinois on 7 August 2015. The package contained two 14-ounce bottles of ethanol-based Clubman Jeris Hair Tonic, which FedEx staff found was leaking at its Cary, Illinois sorting facility.
The FAA allege Amazon did not properly pack the shipment, mark or label it as containing hazardous materials, provide shipping papers indicating the amount, type or nature of the material and allegedly did not provide emergency response information.
This is the fourth time the FAA has proposed fines against the online retailer this year, with penalties totalling $480,000 in June for three separate breaches.
Amazon UK was also fined £65,000 in September for dangerous goods breaches in a case brought by the Civil Aviation Authority.
