Junkanoo Air started commercial freight operations at the end of August, the airline’s president Christopher King has explained in media outlets across the Caribbean.
The carrier begun flights on 30 August with cargo flights between the Bahamas, the USA (South Florida), and other islands in the Caribbean including Turks & Caicos, Haiti and Cuba.
Junkanoo Air’s main base is Nassau Lynden Pindling International Airport, the main gateway to the Bahamas and fourth busiest in the Caribbean.
King tells the Tribune online edition in the Caribbean that Junkanoo Air is now focusing on technology as part of its $1 million investment.
He adds the carrier is seeking business from local freight forwarders and residents of the Caribbean and is targeting various cargo sectors, while also boosting Bahamian exports such as the island’s craft industry and the island’s economy.
Jukanoo Air’s fleet consists of two Piper PA-31-350 Chieftain Freighters, but it reportedly plans to acquire Beechcraft 1900 turboprops over the coming year.
The carrier is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Bahamas (CAA) and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and was the first Bahamian airline certified to haul HAZMAT (hazardous materials).
