Having started his career in logistics as a Cargo Agent at Abu Dhabi Airport, Rajkumar Murukan Achary has been at Etihad Airways since 2010. For the past five years, he has been the Duty Manager – Cargo Operations Centre, supporting the airline’s global network.
What quote has most resonated with you?
Aristotle once said, “Quality is not an act, it is a habit,” and I believe this is true both professionally and personally.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever received was from my father. He told me to live life on my own terms, and that’s what I have tried to do ever since.
What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?
Scuba diving in the Seychelles definitely makes my list of the top most adventurous things I have done.
If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would it be and why?
My father, Sri Budha, and Richard Branson.
What’s something we wouldn’t know about you from your CV?
One thing you wouldn’t know about me from my CV is that I’ve cultivated genuine friendships all around the world. These relationships are something I wouldn’t have been able to achieve without the opportunities provided by my line of work.
What hobby have you always wanted to try but never got around to?
Cross-country driving. I’m still hoping I get around to it one day.
If you had not pursued a career in airfreight, what other field would you have liked to go into?
If I weren’t in logistics and airfreight, I think I would have stuck to my original ambition of getting into the travel and tourism sector.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would love to have the ability to help people to think more positively. I think if people approach even the toughest of challenges with a can-do attitude, they would be amazed at what they can achieve.
What’s your proudest moment and your biggest regret?
My proudest moment was when I held my son in my arms for the first time. My biggest regret is not having my father by my side when I did, as I lost him when I was quite young.
If there was a movie made about your life, who would you like to see play the lead role?
I’m not sure there’s a huge similarity between us, but I would love to see Christian Bale play me. He’s a phenomenal actor.
Looking back over your career, what would your message be to someone considering a career in logistics?
If you’re considering a career in logistics, focus on gaining relevant education or training in supply chain management, transportation, or operations. Look for opportunities to intern or gain experience in the field to understand its complexities and demands. Develop strong organisational and problem-solving skills, as well as attention to detail, as these are crucial in logistics roles. Stay updated on industry trends and technologies, and be open to learning and adapting as the field evolves. Networking with professionals in the industry can also provide valuable insights and opportunities.
How do you motivate your team?
I motivate my team by encouraging open communication and actively listening to their ideas and concerns. I also provide opportunities for their growth and development, ensuring they feel valued and supported in their roles.
What is the one item you can’t travel without?
Definitely my phone.
Who is your role model?
That’s an easy one – my father has been my biggest role model.

Journey to Joy.

What’s the best and worst purchase you’ve ever made?
The best purchase I’ve ever made is a house back in my village. As for the worst purchase, I don’t think I’ve made one. I think very carefully before spending money on anything.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
It would have to be my mum’s rice and fish curry. It’s absolutely delicious.
