60 Seconds With… Michael Cox

With over three decades of experience in the aviation and air cargo industry, Michael Cox is a seasoned leader known for his strategic vision and operational expertise. Currently serving as President of Avia Cargo, Michael has built a reputation for driving innovation and efficiency in the logistics sector.

How did you get into the air cargo and logistics industry?

I was originally in the passenger side of British Midland, and in 1992, they asked me to move to cargo. I knew nothing about it at the time, but once I stepped into it, I loved it—and I’ve stayed ever since.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Worry about the things you can control. The things you can’t? Don’t waste time stressing over them.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

I completely changed my life at 33. I gave up everything and moved to New York to start a new career.

If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be?

My grandmother—I miss her every day. Margaret Thatcher, because I admired how forthright she was. And George Michael—his music was a huge part of my teenage years in the ‘80s.

What’s something people don’t know about you from your CV?

My first job at 13 was in a butcher shop—on the very day Elvis Presley died.

If you could start a career in a completely different field, what would it be?

Politics.

What superpower would you choose?

Time travel.

What’s your proudest moment?

Buying my first house.

Any regrets?

I don’t believe in regrets. We all make decisions that, in hindsight, weren’t the best. But I see them as learning experiences rather than regrets.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

Colin Firth—he’s very English. But for my grey hair? Maybe George Clooney.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in air cargo?

Be open to change. No two days will ever be the same.

How do you motivate your team?

Communication is key. Don’t hide behind emails—when in doubt, pick up the phone. And if you make a mistake, always own it.

One item you can’t travel without?

My phone.

Favourite book?

Right now, I’m reading a Patterson novel called London. I love thrillers.

Who is your role model?

My parents.

What would your autobiography be called?

Jobs to Be Done.

Cats or dogs?

I have three dogs, but I’ve had cats before. People even say I behave like a cat.

Are you an early riser or a night owl?

That changes with age. I used to be a night owl, but now I’m an early riser.

Best and worst purchase you’ve ever made?

Best? My house. Worst? We all buy things on a whim that we later regret.

If you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Fruit and cheese.

Most used emoji?

I hate emojis! People should use words more. But if I had to choose one, it’s probably the thumbs-up.
