With more than 25 years in aviation, Matthieu Casey’s career began in business intelligence on the passenger side before his curiosity about cargo led him to switch lanes. Two decades later, he’s at the helm of Air Canada Cargo’s commercial strategy, blending a love of data with a hands-on appreciation for warehouse operations and frontline teams.
What was your dream job as a child?
Pilot.
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in the industry?
The advancements that we’re seeing in digitalisation. Over the last 25 years that I’ve been in the industry, I’ve never seen it ramp up as quickly as now.
What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever shipped?
A 45-foot screen for a movie release in South America. It took up almost half the length of one of our freighters.
What’s one buzzword you secretly dislike?
Synergy. I like synergy, I just think the word is too used.
If you could swap jobs with anyone for a day, who would it be?
Probably a warehouse man. I just want to be on the floor and experience the cargo myself and spend the day in the warehouse.
Which three items would you bring to a desert island?
My music — I need my music — a really good book, and it might be cheating, but my family.
What’s your guilty pleasure TV show or movie?
Any Jason Bourne movie. I love the action. It’s always fun.
What’s the most exciting place you’ve visited for work?
The inner workings of the Panama Canal. Super interesting, very intriguing.
If you could introduce one new regulation in air cargo, what would it be?
Simplification of data across all modes of transportation and government entities.
What’s something on your bucket list?
Learning how to play the piano.
What’s the best airport in the world, and why?
Hong Kong. I love how incredibly connected it is. It’s a beautiful airport to land, and there’s gorgeous scenery all around.
How did you get into airfreight/logistics?
I started in business intelligence on the passenger side and started looking into what was happening on the cargo side. It was just too fascinating for me to pass up.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
White water rafting and buying a motorcycle.
What’s something we wouldn’t know about you from your CV?
I love to play hockey.
What hobby have you always wanted to try but never got around to?
Playing piano.
What’s your proudest moment and your biggest regret?
Proudest moment: being a father of my three children
Biggest regret: not always spending as much time as I’d like with them, but I try to make up for that.
