60 Seconds With … Gertjan Roelands

Gertjan Roelands is the senior vice president commercial (CCO) at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo. In this global role, he is responsible for all commercial activities across more than 60 markets. His portfolio includes sales, distribution, local operations, digital, customer service, key accounts, products, aftercare, commercial strategy, sustainability, and marketing.

Over the past five years, GertJan has led a significant commercial transformation, aiming to position AFKLMP as the most customer-centric airfreight carrier in the industry by fully embracing technology. A key achievement under his leadership is the development of an in-house developed online booking and servicing platform, now responsible for 88 percent of bookings—setting a new benchmark in the industry. Equally important to him is championing sustainability and accelerating the decarbonisation of airfreight—an ambition that reflects both corporate responsibility and personal commitment.

What is your most memorable moment in the air cargo industry?

When I stepped into my current role in March 2019, we immediately faced the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was crisis management from day one—stabilising operations while rapidly rebuilding critical airfreight connections. We worked relentlessly to transport essential goods including pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and medical equipment. This period underscored how vital airfreight is as part of global infrastructure and revealed the true scale of globalisation. At one point, our entire widebody passenger fleet was repurposed to carry only cargo. The ingenuity, dedication, and resilience of our teams during this time were nothing short of remarkable. I remain immensely proud of what we accomplished together.

Window or aisle seat?

Window seat. I enjoy watching the world from above—crossing countries and continents. It reminds me of the power of flight to connect people, cultures, and ideas.

Which three items would you bring to a desert island?

Maybe not necessarily items: My family—time with them is invaluable and holiday moments are when I can be fully present. A good book—to feed the mind. And my diving gear—I find peace and beauty in the underwater world. It’s like meditation.

If you could introduce one new regulation in air cargo, what would it be?

I would advocate for standardised APIs across the industry. This would not only fast-track digitalisation but also significantly improve efficiency and reduce distribution costs.

What is the best airport in the world and why?

Amsterdam Schiphol—my home airport. Its single-terminal design, based on the hub-and-spoke model, creates a seamless experience for both passengers and cargo. It’s a distinctive and efficient set-up that delivers exceptional value.

How did you get into airfreight and logistics?

I studied economics and aspired to work for a global Dutch company—KLM, Unilever, or Heineken. KLM offered me my first opportunity in the passenger division as Pricing Manager for Africa. I later transitioned into several executive roles before being invited to join the cargo division. I saw it as a chance to challenge myself in a new environment. Becoming VP Europe in Cargo, I had the unique opportunity to help transform a traditional B2B model into a customer-centric, tech-driven organisation—while also supporting initiatives to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Always ask questions. Curiosity fuels growth and understanding.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

After university, I travelled through South America with a close friend. We climbed Machu Picchu and trekked the Colca Canyon Trail—over a week in the Andes with high altitudes and rugged terrain. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

The ability to go without sleep. Imagine what we could do with a few more hours each day!

Cats or dogs?

Dogs—without a doubt.

Early riser or night owl?

Early riser. I like to start the day with a run or a gym session—it sets a positive tone.

Who are your role models?

Definitely my parents and grandparents—they shaped who I am and continue to inspire me. Throughout my career, I’ve also been fortunate to work with leaders who each brought unique talents and perspectives. They’ve all contributed to my growth in meaningful ways.
