60 Seconds With … Emma Oliver

Emma Oliver’s career at American Airlines began in 2012, working on the passenger side of operations. What was your dream job as a child?

I really wanted to be an astronaut. I was convinced that the sense of floating would be incredible, so I asked Father Christmas for a pair of wings. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to deliver.

Most memorable moment in air cargo?

My first Munich. I’d been working in cargo for about two months and had no idea of the size and scale. I was blown away by how many competitor booths, the competition, the truckers… everything. It was amazing to see.

Most unusual thing you’ve ever shipped?

A series of gold artefacts from Bogotá to London for an exhibition at the British Museum.

If you could swap jobs with anyone for a day, who would it be?

I’d probably take over the England rugby team and make some really big decisions on the lineup for the Lions.

Most exciting place you’ve visited for work?

Sri Lanka was absolutely magical. I loved seeing our team there and the business we do. Vietnam was also very special.

If you could introduce one new regulation in air cargo, what would it be?

To allow us all to share information more freely and smoothly, so that we all have the same data and digital access.

Describe your job in three words.

Fast-paced fun. Never the same day twice.

Most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

I drove from the UK to Mongolia through Europe and Russia in a one-litre engine car. It took a month – and it was amazing.

What’s your biggest regret?

Not getting into this industry sooner. I see so many people with relationships lasting 20 or 30 years, and I would’ve loved to have been here in the good old days.
