60 Seconds With… Ashwin Bhat

Ashwin Bhat’s journey in air cargo started in Bombay, where messages were once sent by telex. Today, as CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, he leads one of the industry’s most digitally advanced and customer-focused carriers. But his original ambition was far from the tarmac: “My passion was to become a film director.” While his career took a different direction, the creativity, resilience, and leadership he admired in the arts continue to shape his approach in logistics.

What’s your most memorable moment in the air cargo industry?
Getting nominated as CEO of Lufthansa Cargo.

What was your dream job as a child?
A lot of things. But my passion was to become a film director.

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in the industry?
When I started in the industry, to send a message to Europe from Bombay, I used to use telex messages. Now it’s instantly done via different channels. That’s the biggest one, I would say.

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever shipped?
I wouldn’t call anything unusual. For me, every shipment is special.

Which three items would you bring to a desert island?
My set of songs, a couple of movies, and my cookbook to survive.

What’s the best business lesson you’ve learned the hard way?
Hire optimistic people.

Describe your job in three words.
Exciting, people-oriented, customer-focused.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Leadership is all about making things happen which otherwise would not happen.

How did you get into airfreight/logistics?
I joined air cargo early in my career and never looked back.

What’s your proudest moment?
There are a lot of proud moments in our office. Many moments stand out, not just one.

Looking back over your career, what would your message be to someone considering a career in logistics?
Look at the brand you’re working for. Be aware of all the great things done in the past—and now it is your legacy to take forward.

What is the one item you can’t travel without?
My passport.

What would your autobiography be called?
Bold Moves.

What’s your hidden talent?
I’m a very good cook.
